Gautrain concession reaches financial close on 15-year operating mandate

Sihamba Sonke Mobility has reached financial close on the Post-2026 Gautrain Concession, securing the next 15-year phase of operations, maintenance and refurbishment for Gauteng's rapid-rail network and feeder-bus system.

Executive brief

The concession runs from 2026 to 2041 and was procured under South Africa's public-private partnership framework through the Gautrain Management Agency on behalf of the Gauteng Provincial Government. The new arrangement became effective on 28 September 2026.

Sihamba Sonke Mobility (SSM) brings together the AIIM-Motseng joint venture, Alstom, RATP Dev, GIBB-Crede, AIH Connect and SSM InvestCo. Alstom has stated that its scope across the 15-year concession carries a cumulative contract value of €800 million, including engineering, procurement and construction activities for rail-system modernisation and refurbishment.

This is a financial-close milestone, not merely a preferred-bidder announcement. It secures the operating and refurbishment framework for a major public transport asset while creating a long-duration delivery programme for rail systems, maintenance and passenger-service continuity.

Why it matters

The transaction combines a long-term public transport concession with private-sector operating capability and a defined modernisation role for an international rail supplier. For the infrastructure market, it is a practical example of a mature African transport asset moving into a new PPP delivery cycle rather than relying solely on a fresh greenfield build.

The commercial opportunity is likely to be concentrated in refurbishment, systems engineering, maintenance, operational performance and supporting services. Suppliers should distinguish confirmed concession scope from future packages that have not yet been separately tendered or awarded.
